Nonsense, mischief and plutimication
Astrid Lindgren's World in Pictures
Off on an adventure with Pippi, Michel and Lotta
September 20, 2026 – January 17, 2027
Courageous children, idyllic worlds, boundless adventures, but also mysterious places, enigmatic characters, and mystical tales – all this and much more can be found in the stories of Astrid Lindgren. The creator of Pippi Longstocking, Emil of Lönneberga, and Lotta is considered the most famous, important, and beloved children's author in the world. Her successful books are further brought to life by her magnificent illustrations, brilliantly conceived by a diverse range of illustrators. Ilon Wikland, Walter Scharnweber, Rolf Rettich, Katrin Engelking, and many others have brought the stories to life for us in a multitude of ways. Their techniques range from ink drawings to vibrant watercolors and acrylic paintings, and even collage. The appearance of Madita, Karlsson on the Roof, and Ronja the Robber's Daughter, as well as many of the lesser-known stories, is a testament to their great artistic skill. Astrid Lindgren's characters have become indelibly etched into our cultural memory through her illustrations.
For the first time in the German-speaking world, the LUDWIGGALERIE Schloss Oberhausen is dedicating a comprehensive exhibition to the author and her illustrators. Here, childhood nostalgia meets art history; here, Lindgren's world can be discovered and experienced. Time for Bullerby in Oberhausen!
