Lecture: Irene and Peter Ludwig and the so-called German Pop Art

Siegfried Neuenhausen, The Citizens of B., 1976 (Ludwig Forum for International Art Aachen) © LUDWIGGALERIE Schloss Oberhausen

Pop Art – for a long time primarily associated with the USA or Great Britain. But collectors like Peter Ludwig and Irene Ludwig recognized early on the independent power of the German positions.

Illuminate together Dr. Carla Cugini, Managing Director of the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation Aachen, and Julius Redzinski the development of German Pop Art – from the provocative strategies of Capitalist Realism up to the socially critical imagery of the 1960s and 70s.

What's particularly interesting is that while the Ludwigs prefer to acquire large-format works, Heinz Beck assembles his collection with a focus on smaller formats. The lecture explores the differences between these collecting perspectives – and the Ludwigs' attitude towards German Pop Art.

Registration is requested at: ludwiggalerie@oberhausen.de.

Theater evening at the museum: NippleJesus

Thorsten Brunow © Dirk Gerigk - bsfotoart

On the penultimate day of the exhibition, the museum transforms into a stage. With the solo performance NippleJesus from Nick Hornby The theatre is moving into the LUDWIGGALERIE.

A bouncer, a work of art, an extreme experience. A former nightclub bouncer is assigned to guard a controversial artwork as a museum attendant: a portrait of Christ on the cross, collaged from countless cut-out nipples from porn magazines. Initially repulsed, the protagonist Dave begins to see the work – and the artist – in a new light.

The piece questions the subjective view of art and the workings of contemporary art – cleverly, humorously, and provocatively.

Actor: Thorsten Brunow; Director: Jens Dornheim

Admission €20, concessions €14, tickets available in the webshop at www.ludwiggalerie.de.
