PANIC IN THE RUHR – from Aunt Olga to Udohausen
29 October 2025Since June 29th, Udo has been rocking the Ruhr area with his comet-like performance at the LUDWIGGALERIE. It's clear: Oberhausen has long since become Udohausen!
But Udo's connection to the Ruhr region goes way back – after all, the "Panic President" himself comes from Gronau, right on the Dutch border, practically on the western edge of the Ruhr. From here, he set out to conquer the country with his sound and later with his art. Join us as we explore Lindenberg's roots and be surprised by the places in the Ruhr where Udo left his musical and artistic mark early on.

A Duisburg interlude
At first glance, a perfectly ordinary, unremarkable student ID: issued on November 12, 1962, a black and white portrait of a serious-looking young man in a black sweater. First name: Udo. Last name: Lindenberg.
The aspiring rock musician studied at the Duisburg Conservatory from October 1962 to October 1963. He was already musically active in Düsseldorf at that time when he decided to also approach playing the drums and piano theoretically.
The record of his entrance examination from March 22, 1962, certifies that he has "sufficient melodic" and "good rhythmic" aural skills, but only "limited basic knowledge" of general music theory. No enthusiasm for the young rebel – but he is accepted. A study book from this period documents the subjects Udo attended: choral singing, music history, ear training, a jazz course, and even "rhythmic gymnastics."
Aunt Olga's Crooks' Den
Besides the studying, the student nightlife is of course not to be neglected. In the evenings, you can find Udo in the legendary... Aunt Olga In the Ruhrort district of Duisburg. The cult bar, run by the vivacious and eccentric Olga, was one of the hottest spots in the Ruhr area at the time. One can easily imagine the atmosphere of the place from old photos and accounts: smoky, decadent, and full of dreams that began on the stage in the basement.
Udo remembers how he found his inspiration in this "crooks' meeting place" – during a performance by the singer Benny Quick, who told him about the glitz and glamour of pop star life and ignited the desire for a major breakthrough.
His studies therefore end after only one year. Udo leaves the conservatory and moves on – to Libya as a drummer.
"I ❤ Ruhr area”
Shortly after this brief but formative experience, Udo achieved his breakthrough and became a celebrated rock star. Although life soon took him to Hamburg in northern Germany, his heart still belonged to the Ruhr region – and its honest, raw charm. He was repeatedly drawn back to the Ruhr area for performances, where the audience – as Udo says – "goes wild."

This love is also reflected in his visual art. Bodo Hombach, chairman of the Brost Foundation – which is also a sponsor of the exhibition at the LUDWIGGALERIE – commissioned a painting for the Ruhr Initiative Group in 2011.
Bottrop, Oberhausen's neighboring city, is intended to become a model for the renewal of the entire Ruhr region and other industrially dominated metropolitan areas under the name "InnovationCity Ruhr".
Our preview of No Panic in Bottrop Udo paints the "Ruhr Valley" as the center of the world in hopeful green. Future visions of an innovative and climate-friendly region meet landmarks like the Tetraeder and the pithead towers. Right in the middle, of course, stands Udo himself – in his finest attire, raising a toast to the green city. And, naturally: This monumental work can also be seen at the LUDWIGGALERIE.
Right next to it: I love Ruhr area (2025), commissioned by the Brost Foundation as part of the exhibition. It clearly shows what no one could have said better than Udo himself: "My heart beats in the RuhrgeBEAT, you know that..."

Due to popular demand, the exhibition "Udo Lindenberg. Comet-like and Panic – Liqueur-based Paintings, Udograms, Nudes & Much More" has been extended a second time – until January 18, 2026. Then it will finally close. So, if you want to experience this comet before it moves on, you should hurry – before it does.
